I. The flora abounds...
The toxic rain fell for 7 years straight
And no one was sure if it’d ever abate
A poison polluted the slow-falling drops
The very same poison we’d sprayed on our crops.
We took shelter indoors and awaited the sun
But days turned to years and the sun didn’t come
The fruit trees were barren, the vegetables scarce
And carbon dioxide grew thick in the air.
We had not a choice – we cleaned up our dirt
With radical methods to restore the earth
Then tenderly came the return of our flora
So greenly it sprouted, so fresh was its aura
The roots sang in worship, the flowers in praise
Then, finally came the sun’s life-warming rays
Now, when it rains, we give thanks to our plants
And we don’t take for granted this green second chance.

II. The fauna thrives...
In days now long past, it was nature vs man
We pillaged the seas and we crowded the land
“All ours for the taking!” we boastfully cried
As elephants thinned and the polar bears died.
Not to mention the farms – so cruel they could be!
Pigs and chickens in cages – they yearned to be free
The lives of these creatures, I now shudder to think
Were passed in the crosshairs of garbage and stink.
Now, times are different. We’ve found better ways
Eating fruits and legumes and crisp veggies for days
For protein, we snack on small servings of bugs
(I swear grasshopper buzz is better than drugs…)
Great respect for the animals, that’s the way it is now
We learn from their wisdom, from swordfish, from cow
For fauna live simply, while humans make fuss
Can you hear the whales singing? They’re singing to us.
———
III. ...and the people in the cities are living their best lives.
The migration took place in Year 2030
Our people were restless, our rivers were dirty
We fled from the cities in clamorous crowds
As smoke rose in thunderous, threatening clouds.
Where once there was revelry, silence now fell
This silence suffused our dystopian hell
Trains, once so crowded, now passed by like phantoms
And litter lay strewn ‘cross the sidewalks at random.
But from this dark movement: a chance to work harder
To reform our cities both greener and smarter
So inventors and scientists put brain to brain
And built a new city that breathes and sustains.
The word spread at lightspeed –- our city renewed!
And so we returned to Metropolis II:
Where sun-powered buildings stand tall towards clear skies
And above all, where people lead happier lives.
